The work-from-home arrangements which were ubiquitous throughout the pandemic and, to a lesser degree, for a couple of years afterwards, are now largely a thing of the past for most Canadians. One of the consequences of the return to the office was the need for parents who work outside the home to arrange for (and pay for) child care – sometimes for the after-school period and sometimes for the entire day.
At a time when Canadian households are coping simultaneously with rising interest rates and an inflation rate which recently hit its highest point in nearly four decades, every dollar of income counts. And where that income can be obtained with minimal effort, and received tax-free, then it’s a win-win for the recipient.
When parents separate and divorce, it is frequently the case that they are able to agree on an arrangement to share custody of their children. Such a shared-custody arrangement is often to the benefit of all concerned, especially the children of the marriage.
Raising children is expensive and, in recognition of that fact, the federal government has, for more than half a century, provided financial assistance to parents to help with those costs. That assistance has ranged from monthly Family Allowance payments received by families during the 1960s to its current iteration, the Canada Child Benefit.
